Grade II listed Renovation, Cirencester
A Grade II listed property rich in history and charm
Stratton House Hotel, GR Design Studio, and our fantastic builders at Inndecs came together to breathe new life into this unique property on Dyer Street, right in the center of Cirencester. What was once a dated office space has now been beautifully transformed into two individual residential apartments, perfect for weekly rentals and weekend getaways in the Cotswolds.
This Grade II listed property is rich in history and charm, dating back to the late 18th or early 19th century. It even has a remarkable medical legacy, once home to Dr. R. Edgar Hope-Simpson, a pioneering epidemiologist. In 1947, with support from the Medical Research Council, Dr. Hope-Simpson established a research unit here, followed by a virus laboratory in the 1960s. A commemorative plaque still marks the spot today.
When our client acquired the property, it was part-office and part-flat. His vision? To restore and convert it into two thoughtfully designed holiday apartments that honor the building’s heritage while offering modern comfort. The upstairs space lent itself naturally to conversion, but the ground floor, previously an old office, needed significant refurbishment.
Thanks to close collaboration with GR Design Studio and meticulous craftsmanship by Inndecs, this commercial-to-residential project has brought a piece of Cirencester’s history back to life. Each apartment has its own unique feel, yet both stay true to the period character of the original house. Now, this historic gem is ready to welcome guests from near and far.
Not only did we have the pleasure of working with Stratton House Hotel and GR Design Studio, but we were also lucky enough to have the incredibly talented Nikki from Carle & Moss commissioned to capture the transformation. Her beautiful photography truly brings the space to life and showcases every detail of the design and craftsmanship.
What a fantastic dream team, a collaboration that brought together creativity, heritage, and vision to turn this historic property into something truly special.
